Community Living Belleville and Area has a policy of hiring direct support staff members who have successfully completed a minimum of a two-year college diploma in a discipline that is relevant to the position being applied for. Preference is given to prospective candidates who have applied medication training. However, applied medication training is available on-site by a qualified, in-house instructor.
Personal Outcomes Worker IIIs are drawn from the following college diploma courses: Developmental Service Workers, Early Childhood Educators, Social Services Workers, Child & Youth Workers and Behavioral Science Technicians/Technologists. This classification also includes all current employees, who are grandfathered under the old Developmental Services Worker classification and obtained their credentials through in-house, sponsored college training. University graduates in programs with a direct relevance to the supports and services provided by Community Living Belleville and Area will also be considered.
As a prerequisite to employment, all potential new employees must consent to a Criminal Reference Check at their own expense. The Employer will process this for them. In addition to the CPIC, all new employees must undergo a medical examination prior to commencement of employment. This medical relates specifically to the physical demands of the position and is designed to determine whether the applicant is capable of performing the essential duties of the job and is free of communicable diseases.
All candidates must present Community Living Belleville and Area with two references who can speak to their skills and abilities on the job as well as their communication skills and sense of teamwork.
Candidates selected for employment at Community Living Belleville and Area must complete four (4) hours of volunteered time at the selected location. This will provide the people supported with an opportunity to meet employment candidates and assist us in the decision-making process for new employees. It also provides potential, new employees with a better understanding of whom they will be supporting and what is expected of them. A decision to hire will be made after this visit.
All new employees must complete mandatory training on their own time before the end of their probationary period. However, the training is provided free of charge by Community Living Belleville and Area. This training includes: CPR/First Aid, CPI, Defensive Driving, WHMIS, Back Care, Rights Training, Outcomes Training, Abuse and Neglect Training and a complete Health & Safety Orientation.
Once a new employee has successfully completed their probationary period of 360 working hours, they are free to submit the cost of their pre-employment medical for reimbursement at that time. These claims should be sent to Human Resources and they, in turn, will ensure the reimbursement.
Other Staffing Opportunities
As job vacancies arise in other areas such as Administration, Support Services, etc., the positions are posted internally first, specifying the required qualifications. We only seek applications externally if we are unsuccessful in securing an appropriate candidate from within. If it is necessary, we place advertisements in the local newspapers, college electronic posting boards, etc. to invite external applications. We participate actively on the Advisory Committees of the DSW Program, the SSW Program and the CYW Program at Loyalist College.
